In August, Megan Smith, daughter of a Riverside Fire Captain, was diagnosed with Guillian Barre then discovered she had a brain tumor. Well now the GBS is on the mend and as of today she will be on the mend from brain surgery. With that, she hasn’t been working since August and most likely won't be back for a few more months. The Riverside Police Officers' Association is devastated by the death of one of our members, Riverside Police Sergeant Matt Lewis. Sergeant Lewis was killed in an off duty motorcycle accident on August 1, 2022. He was a 25 year veteran of the Riverside Police Department who served the community of Riverside honorably as a police officer, a detective and a patrol sergeant. Matt was a loving family man with 4 children and a grandchild.

On the evening of Saturday, February 19, 2022, the Huntington Beach Police Department helicopter, HB-1, was responding to a priority call when it crashed into the waters off Newport Beach with two officers on board. Both officers were pulled from the helicopter by civilians and emergency responders and transported to local area hospitals. The crash resulted in the injury of one officer and the death of Officer Nicholas Vella.
